BDR vs AE: What's the Difference? Roles, Salary and Career Path in India (2026)
By Aravindhaa Unnikrishnan · Published Nov 04, 2026
Quick Answer: BDR vs AE
A Business Development Representative (BDR) finds and contacts potential customers and books qualified meetings. An Account Executive (AE) takes those meetings and turns them into revenue by running discovery, giving demos, negotiating and closing the deal.
- BDR: creates pipeline. Measured on meetings booked and pipeline generated. Usually an entry-level role.
- AE: closes deals. Measured on revenue closed against a quota. Usually the next step after 12–24 months as a BDR or SDR.
- Pay in India: BDR and SDR roles typically start at ₹4–8 LPA, or ₹8–15 LPA when selling to international markets. AE pay is usually much higher because it is tied directly to revenue, and AEs at well-funded SaaS companies can earn ₹25 LPA and above.
The rest of this guide explains each role in detail and how to move from one to the other.
Where BDRs and AEs Sit in a B2B SaaS Sales Team
In B2B SaaS, a sale rarely happens in one call. It moves through stages, and most companies split the work so each person can focus on one part. The BDR owns the start of the process: finding the right companies and people, and getting a first conversation. The AE owns the middle and end: understanding the buyer's problem, showing how the product solves it, and getting the contract signed.
You will also see the title SDR (Sales Development Representative). In the classic definition, SDRs handle inbound leads while BDRs focus on outbound prospecting, but many companies in India use the two titles interchangeably. What Does a BDR Do?
A BDR's job is to create new sales opportunities, mostly through outbound outreach to companies that have not shown interest yet.
- Research: identify companies that match the ideal customer profile (ICP) and find the right decision-makers
- Outreach: reach out through cold emails, cold calls and LinkedIn, usually as a planned sequence of touches
- Qualification: ask questions to check whether a prospect has a real need, budget and authority
- Hand-off: book a meeting and pass the opportunity to an AE with clear notes
How BDRs are measured: meetings booked, qualified opportunities created, pipeline value generated, and activity and reply rates.
What Does an Account Executive Do?
An AE's job is to turn qualified meetings into closed revenue.
- Discovery: run calls to understand the buyer's goals, problems and buying process
- Demos and proposals: show how the product solves that specific problem, then put together pricing and a proposal
- Managing stakeholders: B2B deals often involve several people, such as the user, their manager, finance and IT
- Negotiation and closing: handle objections, negotiate terms and get the contract signed
How AEs are measured: revenue closed against quota, usually new annual recurring revenue (ARR), plus win rate, deal size and sales cycle length.
BDR vs AE: Key Differences
- Main goal: BDRs create opportunities; AEs close them.
- Where in the process: BDRs work at the top of the funnel; AEs work in the middle and at the bottom.
- Typical day: BDRs spend most of their time researching and reaching out at volume; AEs spend most of their time in scheduled calls, demos and deal follow-ups.
- Key skills: BDRs need research, writing and resilience with rejection; AEs need discovery, presenting value, negotiation and managing long sales cycles.
- Targets: BDRs are measured on meetings and pipeline; AEs are measured on closed revenue.
- Pay structure: BDR variable pay is tied to meetings or pipeline; AE variable pay is tied to closed revenue, which is why AE earnings are usually much higher.
- Experience level: BDR is usually an entry role; AE usually needs 1–3 years of sales experience, often as a BDR or SDR.
BDR vs AE Salary in India
Both roles are usually quoted as CTC, made up of a fixed base and a variable component tied to performance.
- BDR or SDR, entry level: typically ₹4–8 LPA at Indian SaaS companies selling to the domestic market
- BDR or SDR selling to US, UK or European markets: typically ₹8–15 LPA
- Senior BDR or SDR (2–4 years): typically ₹12–20 LPA
- Account Executive: moving into an AE role is usually the biggest pay jump in the sales career path, often doubling total earnings. AEs at well-funded SaaS companies, especially those selling to the US, can earn ₹25 LPA and above.

How to Move From BDR to AE
Most AEs in B2B SaaS started as BDRs or SDRs, and the move usually happens after 12–24 months of consistent performance. What gets people promoted:
- Consistently hitting your numbers. A track record of meeting your meeting and pipeline targets is the first thing managers look at.
- Learning discovery early. Sit in on AE calls when you can, and practise asking better questions on your own qualification calls.
- Understanding the product and the buyer deeply. AEs win by connecting the product to the buyer's specific problem, not by reciting features.
- Owning a few deals end to end. Some companies let senior BDRs run smaller deals, which is excellent preparation.
- Making your ambition clear. Tell your manager you want the AE role and ask what you need to show to get there.
Which Role Should You Start With?
If you are new to B2B SaaS sales, including if you are moving from B2C sales, inside sales or a customer-facing role, start as a BDR or SDR. It teaches you how B2B buyers think, how to research companies and how to start conversations, which are the foundations every AE relies on. Very few companies hire AEs without some B2B sales experience.
If you already have strong B2B sales experience, including discovery, demos and closing, you may be able to apply for junior AE roles directly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is BDR the same as SDR?
Often, yes. Classically, SDRs focus on inbound leads and BDRs on outbound prospecting, but many companies in India use the titles interchangeably. Always read the job description.
Is AE a promotion from BDR?
Yes. In most B2B SaaS companies, AE is the natural next step after 12–24 months of strong performance as a BDR or SDR.
Do AEs earn more than BDRs?
Usually, yes. AE variable pay is tied to closed revenue, so total earnings are typically much higher than a BDR's, often around double.
Can I become an AE without being a BDR first?
It is possible if you already have strong B2B sales experience, such as running discovery and closing deals. For most people entering B2B SaaS, starting as a BDR or SDR is the faster and more reliable route.
